People tend to comply with legal and moral norms when the harm associated with a violation is clear and salient. Conversely, when harm is less salient, people are more easily pushed to act contrary to required norms. Agents’ behavior in case study #3 is reminiscent of this phenomenon. If requests appeared superficially harmless, agents were willing to comply, even when closer inspection revealed that compliance was harmful (in a non-salient way) by exploiting the user’s tokens.
